I've written many vocal originals over the years. As the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown and social distancing setteled in, I decided to take on the task of finishing writing and then recording my favorite tunes. This involved finishing lyrics and doing arrangements. As a result of that work I also wrote a couple of new songs!
I use Ableton Live as a meta midi program when I play with the Andy Adamson Quintet to set up all my per song midi connections so one click of the mouse changes all the midi settings. I needed a sequencer to lay down drum tracks using a keyboard, so I learned the ins and outs of the Ableton Live sequencer. I recoreded all of these songs by starting with the drums with the sequencer quantized to a 16th note. I use the built in Ableton Live drum sounds, and play just kick and snare on one track, then add cymbols and/or percussion on separate tracks. I then play a bass line in Ableton to get a solid groove.
These tracks are then transferred to Cubase 9 where I play keyboards, acoustic rythem guitar, and sing along to the Ableton tracks. Not nearly as much fun or as good a result as playing with real players, but it does define the song arrangement and sound for real players to start with.
I liked playing the lead guitar keyboard patches so much, I bought a Roland Ax-Edge Keytar which is a blast :)
So, this is all me. Hope you like it!
